merigold - “Overexposure”

From Geneva, Switzerland, merigold has just released the dream pop track, “Overexposure.”

Overexposure” is driven by an energetic, powerful, and compelling drum beat that becomes almost hypnotic, thanks to the repeating, syncopated grooves. The percussion permeates a mood that feels uplifting, determined, yet subtly reflective, much like the drums in Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way.” Providing depth and cohesive stability to this momentum is the pumping synth bass.

The track has a pleasing sense of space, with layers added thoughtfully to enhance the mood. From the first chorus, synth tones begin to melodically weave with a pleasing sense of elegance, contrasting with the more forceful drums and bass. At the track’s crescendo, electric guitar thickens up the pulsing rhythmic groove, while trumpets expand the soundscape with a sense of rousing grandeur.

It is however the emotive vocal of merigold that makes “Overexposure” a real gem. In places, the heartfelt and intimate delivery reminds me of Dolores O’Riordan’s vocal performance on “Linger,” if you removed the Irish accent. Supported by lush backing vocals throughout, the performance is simply delightful.

On the track, merigold adds: “Written during a sleepless night in the woods [the song] is about finding real love in a world that’s falling apart.” “Overexposure” is built on a really pleasing melody that lingers long after the first play. The mood is nostalgic, bittersweet, romantic, and uplifting. This immersive and dreamy track is definitely one that you need on your playlists.
