Mary Middlefield - “Bite Me”
From Switzerland, Mary Middlefield returns to the blog with the indie pop-rock track, “Bite Me.”
“Bite Me” is a raw, unfiltered slice of indie pop-rock that you cannot help but play again and again. It balances elegantly intimacy with restless, gritty reflection. Shimmering layers of atmospheric electric guitar swirl with defiant, fuzzed out layers and a growling bass. The textures are allowed to flourish, ebb and flow almost as if you are being held spellbound in a daydream. Knitting this emotional arc together are the drums. Littered with lush grooves and swaying patterns it truly brings the track alive.
Middlefield serves up a gorgeously intimate vocal that feels almost weightless as it guides us through the musical layers. As the music and vocal grows in intensity so do the breathy harmonies that only serve to lift the storytelling performance to new heights.
About the track, Middlefield adds: “I remember going into a session and whipping this up in just one night. It all started with that chord progression and the first line of the song. I love starting with confrontation. I had been reflecting a lot on what making music means to me—how badly I want to be liked and wanted by the people I play for, the people I chase daily, sending them my music—and that connected to so many aspects of my personal life. Whether it’s a job, your partner, or a family member you’re struggling with, I think this song is something a lot of people can relate to.”
“Bite Me” perfectly marries mood and meaning in one hell of an indie pop rock track. This release only serves to build anticipation to fever pitch for Mary Middlefield’s forthcoming album, slated for release later this year.
