M. Dunton - “I Left My Heart Out West”
East Nashville-based singer-songwriter M. Dunton checks off all of our folksy boxes with his new release: “I Left My Heart Out West.”
After a brief, ambient fade-in, the arrangement is brought to life with a barebones rhythm that lends its support to some vibrantly displayed acoustic guitar. Straight out of the gate, “I Left My Heart Out West” permeates a hopeful and meditative mood, perfect for those cross-country roadtrips or simply while sipping your coffee in the kitchen.
Dunton’s vocal soon emerges and with a steamer trunk full of authentic vibes, his voice has been designed by the universe for this flavor of storytelling. Within the first few lines of lyrics, we hear a concise sense of honesty that is reminiscent of Aaron Lee Tasjan and Gregory Alan Isakov, which is no small feat when it comes to this stripped-back craft.
As the track progresses, new elements emerge in order to add width to the production, including some bass and mellow electric guitar. And in the distance, the strikingly ethereal sounds of lap steel permeate the sonic space, which is easily one of the most remarkable instruments that has ever graced the genre.
The arrival of the hook ignites a fully-fleshed rhythm, elevating “I Left My Heart Out West” to an anthemic and heavenly level of sound. The song remains here for the rest of its duration, instilling a joyous sense of forward momentum into our earthly existence. If you happen to be the kind of person whose mental state relies upon the music you hear, this one will make you happy to be alive.
