Luna Keller x Jory Avner - “Paper Moon”
Cologne-based Luna Keller has teamed up with Chicagoan Jory Avner to bring listeners the raw and folksy sounds of “Paper Moon.”
The track begins with some ethereal ambience before opening up to reveal the stripped-back sounds of gently strummed acoustic guitar and the sparsely played notes from a piano. Immediately upon pressing the play button, “Paper Moon” lands within our melancholic niche for offerings of the indie folk variety.
Keller’s vocal is the first to arrive, delivering lyrics of longing, echoing every human’s desire for some semblance of a meaningful connection. It is not often that this search bears fruitful results, though we can often find some respite in the music that drifts into our box of submissions– for this reason, we find that the content of “Paper Moon” resonates deeply within our chests.
Having featured most of the tracks from Keller’s recent LP, Ocean Inside Of Me, it’s good to hear her delicate and honest vocal again, and when Avner arrives with a deeper harmony, we find ourselves drifting away on a somber cloud of indie folk goodness. Though recorded on opposite ends of the ocean, “Paper Moon” provides the illusion that it was recorded in the same room, which is what we look for in these more intimate numbers.
As “Paper Moon” progresses, the arrangement picks up some additional elements, most notably on the final third of the song, when the rhythm section arrives in full force. At this point, the layers of vocals rise like a grand sea of emotion, leaving listeners with no choice but to play the song on a constant loop as they wait for the universe to reveal some sort of life raft via human connection. We hope that you enjoy the track as much as we do.
