Ponta Preta - “Liquor Liquor”

Ponta Preta‘s latest release, “Liquor Liquor,” is a highly enjoyable track that blends the tones of bands like The Black Keys and The Murlocs into an uninhibited, fun sound.

The opening guitar riff of “Liquor Liquor” immediately grabs your attention and establishes the mood for the rest of the song. It’s fuzzy, gritty, and one hell of a hook. This song’s slow but effective drumming serves as a strong foundation for the rest of the instrumentation. The track has a slick swagger and funky bass line that proves difficult not to bob your head along to it. The clean guitar work enhances the rhythm and provides a pleasing textural contrast to the lead guitar’s darker tones.

The retro-styled, bright organ that enters throughout the main chorus sections of “Liquor Liquor” is one of the song’s most notable features. The music gains a beautiful sense of nostalgia from it, while still sounding new and contemporary. The band’s ability to fluidly combine old and new sounds is demonstrated by the organ solo in the track’s second half– there is a definite hint of the 1960s here.

The vocal on this song is simply fantastic; a good distortion effect gives its delivery a little bit of grit and attitude. However, it is also light-hearted and playful, which nicely reflects the song’s overall mood. The chorus of “Liquor Liquor” is very memorable due to its simplicity. The whole song is textbook earworm.

Overall, “Liquor Liquor” is an excellent release from Ponta Preta, with great retro organ tones, fuzzy guitar riffs, and playful vocals. This is a decent foretaste of their new LP, which will be released in September.
