Joe McLeod - “Horizon”

Ontario-based Joe McLeod has just released the beautifully melancholic “Horizon,” a song full of vivid lyrics, passion, and moody tones.

The song begins with a kick drum, which pushes the production forward with determination. Acoustic fingerpicking weaves a sense of melancholy through its dissonant sounds, while low piano notes moodily pad the track, enhancing its dark atmosphere. As the song moves out of the verses, it gains a satisfying contrast with more optimistic tones. The snare urges forth the arrangement with a sense of resolve. This is nicely enhanced by subtle high piano notes that flesh out and mimic the vocal melody.

Trumpets enhance the mood, giving the arrangement a sense of reflection, as well as refinement. One of the greatest features of this song is the way that McLeod plays with the dynamics, using the drums to give direction and energy, but also stripping them back to allow focus upon the textures and lyrics. The drums also act as nice ear candy, with some elements often panning across the soundscape.

I really enjoy how McLeod’s vocal is drenched in a lush and spacious reverb that fills the gaps between the instruments. The vocal grows dynamically and satisfyingly until it is soaring over the arrangement. There is a sense of vulnerability to the tones as it emotionally delivers the lyrics, which are descriptive, storytelling, and melancholic. They center on the way that struggles within a relationship are resolved primarily via love, connection, and time

Horizon” is a gorgeous track that demonstrates McLeod’s powers as a songwriter. Full of honesty and vulnerability, it will leave you wanting more.
