Joel Plaskett - “Hey Moon (A Campfire Song)”
Eastern Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joel Plaskett makes his debut on our blog with the anthemic and heartfelt “Hey Moon (A Campfire Song).”
Like any good campfire tune, this one confidently begins with the refrain, featuring Plaskett’s vocal over the top of some poised strums from an acoustic guitar. It is immediately apparent that this is the singalong we’ve all been waiting for to liven up those autumn evenings around the fire pit– which are fast-approaching as we bid farewell to the last leg of another summer.
And please do not be fooled by how sparsely the song begins, because the arrangement slowly and gradually expands with the addition of multiple instruments. The first signs of this are some subtle licks from an electric guitar, followed by some cleverly placed keys of a piano– all of which should be interpreted as foreshadowing, as it is not long before we’re up to our ears in the glorious sound of a full band.
Plaskett is able to deliver thoughtful lines of lyrics in a way that retain their excitement while also being full of introspection. And there are points within the track where you can almost hear him smiling as he sings, particularly when the gang vocals show up for the second chorus. The song comes complete with a tasteful guitar lead, as well as a dynamic break, proof that it has been crafted by someone who knows a thing or two about songwriting.
This is our first time hearing from Plaskett, but after repeatedly listening to “Hey Moon (A Campfire Song),” we cannot wait to see what he sends over to us next.
