Fright Years - “Obstacles”
Edinburgh-based band Fright Years have just released the devastatingly beautiful indie rock track “Obstacles.”
“Obstacles” is a slow burning yet incredibly hard-hitting track that is designed to sweep you up off your feet. Opening delicately to acoustic guitar that bears a resemblance to Snow Patrol’s “How to Be Dead.” Layers are applied thoughtfully whether the weaving electric guitar parts of the casual stride of the drums. Sublimely meditative and increasingly cinematic, the music builds tension with ease with lush melodies twisting and turning with incredible effortlessness. All the while Fright Years are sailing us into the storm of one hell of an anthemic chorus.
Drenched in emotion, the vocal performance of Jules Kelly truly makes the track special. Filled with expression and passion, the tones can only be described as strikingly moving. It guides us from confessional intimacy all the way to widescreen, heart-wrenching heights. Believe me, it is one of those grand crescendos that only gets bigger and bigger.
On the track, Kelly adds: “Obstacles is about navigating a new reality and all the strange thoughts that accompany a life altering change. It’s about not knowing whether to fight off suffering or to embrace it, or how to do either when you don’t have much control over your situation.”
Soul stirring, raw and intensely blooding, “Obstacles” is taken from the EP, Still Life, which is out now. Connect with Fright Years: Spotify | Instagram
