Eli Smart - “Another Sundown”

Singer-songwriter Eli Smart transports us to a golden sunset on the island of Kauai, Hawaii with the slow burning and hypnotic “Another Sundown.”
There is a dazzling, dreamlike quality to “Another Sundown” as we are immersed in the jazzy, samba-esque, bossa nova grooves. The rhythm wonderfully allows the vocals to breathe whilst maintaining a steady sense of forward momentum. Driven by acoustic guitar, understated percussive elements and the simple but effective bass line, the track is rich in syncopation and swing.
During the musical break, in a move reminiscent of later Talk Talk or DARKSIDE, Eli Smart plays with texture with confident ease. Touches of distorted guitar warp to harmonica-like tones as the mood atmospherically morphs into an increasingly meditatively and spacious ambience. The intimate, expressive vocal delivery is gentle and rich in harmonies, acting almost as a musical instrument in itself as it fleshes out the melody.
On the new single, Eli Smart adds: “Another Sundown is an ode to a particular place back home. There’s a lookout close to my house which faces the north east side of the island. It’s a magical little zone. I first started writing this song there. The tones and textures of this tune, for me, capture another shade of life back home. A deeper beauty within the stormy darker days. An underwater pulse is at the core groove of this tune, it was a total joy and sonic adventure to follow it and see this tune all the way to the surface.”
