Dylan DiNello - “On My Mind”
Athens, Georgia-based singer-songwriter Dylan DiNello has just ignited the airwaves with “On My Mind,” a folksy love song with a lush, road-trip appeal.
“On My Mind” opens to the delightfully chill sounds of a finger-plucked acoustic guitar, with subdued and ambient background vocals padding out the track’s underbelly. The result is immediately introspective, and the production leans towards the cinematic, guaranteed to enchant all fans of indie folk.
DiNello’s vocal soon arrives, slightly reminiscent of Ben Bridwell and Andy Hull as he carefully delivers a message of love and longing. At this point, “On My Mind” maintains a reasonably sparse arrangement, with only the occasional kick drum at the top of each measure, providing just enough forward momentum to push the song through your emotions.
As the track moves forward, the ethereal ambience elevates and more drum sounds are added, resulting in a natural crescendo that has kept us returning for multiple listens. The amount of reverb on the vocal brings a fantastic sense of width to the production and, upon the arrival of the piano, “On My Mind” takes flight.
A significant focal point here is the seemingly infinite sea of backing vocal layers. DiNello composed “On My Mind” in his basement and we are suddenly curious about his setup, given that the track sounds just as good as any major studio production we’ve heard in the last year. This song is perfect for any roadtrip upon which you may soon embark, or for casually listening in the kitchen as your coffee percolates.
