Dylan Cox - “The Painted Goose”
Los Angeles-born, Paris-based singer-songwriter Dylan Cox has just released the wonderfully heartfelt sounds of “The Painted Goose,” a folksy journey through “healing, heartbreak, and the possibility of art.”
“The Painted Goose” first grabs hold of its listener via the alluringly melancholic sound of acoustic guitar as its strums reverberate across the far reaches of the sonic landscape. Cox’s vocal performance soon falls into place, like an old friend dropping in to check up on you, warmly reminiscent of both Andy Hull and Nathan Hussey.
The first third of the track is devoted to a more stripped-back, intimate performance, before the arrival of the gentle rhythm section emerges to propel “The Painted Goose” forward. A barebones beat and some bass provide a sturdy foundation while the glorious, open chords from an electric guitar wash across the arrangement in resonating waves of pure aural bliss.
Midpoint beckons the arrival of more ear candy, including some keys that softy churn in the distance, as well as the occasional flourish of lead guitar. The resulting sound is completely immersive and elegant and it is very clear that a great deal of love went into producing the track.
Layers of vocals break the surface as “The Painted Goose” enters the final stretches of its marvelous crescendo, leaving listeners to lose themselves amidst the heavenly textures of guitar. This is our first time hearing from Dylan Cox, but after spending some time with this emotionally-charged performance, we certainly hope it is not the last.
