Driftwood - “December Last Call”
Upstate New York-based indie rock band Driftwood have just released the glorious Americana-infused “December Last Call.”
“December Last Call” has the undeniable feel of a vintage rock banger. The track opens to a pulsing kick drum and bright acoustic guitar. These two instruments instantly lock into an infectious groove. Violin draws you into the arrangement, making me think of Slade tracks from the 1970s.
Bass is added as the song enters its stride, lending a warm and bouncing foundation. Light but gritty electric guitar adds texture whilst organ provides a lush, glowing pad. The music is simply infectious and engaging.
“December Last Call” follows the well-trodden rock ’n’ roll formula of contrasting elements. Stripped-back sections of satisfying simplicity build tension before bursting into the lively and infectious chorus sections.
The lead vocals on this track perfectly capture the upbeat essence at the heart of this song. The performance is enhanced by rich backing layers that permeate a sense of feel-good vibes. These backing layers also follow the retro rock framework as they call and respond, offering robust harmonising support.
Joe Kollar from Driftwood describes the meaning behind the holiday-influenced track: “it’s a drinking song so much so that I don’t remember writing it - thank goodness for voice memos.”
“December Last Call” is a dashing, feel-good song that has all the hallmarks of an anthem. The catchy melodies and infectious grooves will leave you wanting more. It is the title track from Driftwood’s soon-to-be-released new album.
