Devarrow - “Likewise”
Nova Scotia-based Graham Ereaux, aka Devarrow, never ceases to amaze us with his folk-ingrained slices of indie. Today, he returns to the blog with “Likewise,” an epic number designed to fill your life with joy.
If you haven’t been keeping up, Devarrow hits our folksy niche with his consistent use of double-tracked vocals, on display here as soon as you press the play button. Beneath his extraordinary vocal performance, an acoustic guitar modestly churns out some chords, filling the sonic landscape with the warmth of analogue production.
We do not have to wait long before the rest of the band arrives, filling our ears with a remarkably upbeat rhythm section that appears to have been dipped in the rivers of nostalgia. The sheer amount of vintage force coursing through the veins of “Likewise” is enough to convince everyone to immediately add it to their summer-time playlists.
The staccato sounds of piano join the arrangement, hammering along with the rhythm and filling any remaining cracks within the soundscape. And even amidst the driving rhythm and pulsating bass line, the track never abandons its indie-folk nature. This characteristic is further embraced on the final third, when elements are peeled away to reveal Devarrow’s vulnerable falsetto.
The arrival of “Likewise” only further justifies the claim that Devarrow is one of our favorite finds of the year… so, if you have not already done so, take a dive inside of his sound because something tells us that you are absolutely going to fall in love with what you hear.
