Colatura - “suffer dude”

Pittsburg (and Brooklyn)-based, Colatura have just released the spirited indie rock track, “suffer dude.” The song is built around an energetic, urgent drum groove that gives a tight and punchy sense of momentum.  The beat reminds me of the edgy and playful Will Anything Happen” by Blondie.

The high-spirited musical layers evoke a vibe of moody, anxious restlessness. Atmospheric, otherworldly synth pads sustain with a vivid, retro, analog glow. Electric guitar is used delightfully to create contrast, with gentle, smooth tones that mellowly weave and shimmer. Over the choruses, these tones give way to a shoegaze-like expansive wall of enveloping sound. Underneath, the deep bass works closely with the drums, enhancing the sense of driving momentum.

The vocal performance on “suffer dude” has a satisfying, nonchalant atmospheric that is reminiscent of Justine Frischmann and Soccer Mommy. It melodically weaves around the composition, yet exudes an elegant coolness and detachment that truly makes the song compelling.

suffer dude” explores the feelings of grappling with the fear and vulnerability—hesitating to expose oneself and take risks due to the anxiety of criticism or being perceived as uncool for “trying too hard.” Yet, it also reflects the realisation that playing it too safe in life, ultimately, will not lead to any semblance of happiness.

suffer dude” captures the pleasing aesthetics of 1980s new wave with its intoxicating blend of rocking melodies, making it the next musical gem for your playlist.
