Halfloves - “C U Later”
The new song, “C U Later,” by Halfloves, is a superb fusion of dark synth tones and good, old-fashioned indie rock. The song’s vibe is established right away by these sounds and an electric guitar pulsing out an infectious melodic line. The main vocalist sings effortlessly over the track, which has some really lush, stripped back sections. He hits his falsetto effortlessly over the chorus sections, displaying great range in the process. The backing vocals nicely add a dimension of depth and emotion.
Drums push out a solid rhythm and the tambourine’s presence gives the music a great sense of movement to this slow burning beast of a song. For the most of “C U Later,” the guitar playing is understated, either hammering the main riff or acting as a pad over the chorus, but gets its moment to shine after the dynamic break near the end. As a result, the music is skilfully elevated into an outstanding final chorus crescendo. Lyrically, the verses are loaded with a dark and sensual tension exploring the themes of letting go and moving on from the past.
Overall, “C U Later” is a great indie rock single that ticks all the classic boxes. It has the memorable melodic riff and builds into a beast during the last chorus.
