brookelen - “Bad Eyes”
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter brookelen is back with an introspective journey through the process of healing, closing a chapter in life with “Bad Eyes.”
We have long been fans of brookelen’s dream-like, folksy soft-rock sound, so it comes as no surprise how effortlessly “Bad Eyes” nestles itself into our niche. After a few notes from a fuzzy guitar, this track erupts into a full-band performance, complete with a steady rhythm section and lo-fi production.
Rising above the grittiness of the instrumental, brookelen reveals a wonderfully double-tracked vocal performance, designed to fully enchant the listener. The sound was obviously influenced by the likes of Hope Sandoval and Dolores O'Riordan, and that could be one of the reasons her music always seems to deeply resonate with us.
The verses in “Bad Eyes” have the indie-folk allure that brookelen initially utilized to win us over with her craft, but there is a distinct indie-rock vibe in the over-driven refrain that digs deep and hits hard. Layers of guitar saturate the arrangement, lighting a candle for early ‘90s nostalgia and ensuring that we all return for multiple listening sessions.
This is the first we are hearing from brookelen’s new EP, time to go, due out on August 24th, but if “Bad Eyes” is indicative of what the remaining six songs have in store, we truly cannot wait to get them all into our ears.
