Bad Flamingo - “The Devil Knows”
Like clockwork, our favorite masked duo has emerged from the shadows with a new tune: “The Devil Knows.” Bad Flamingo have appeared on our blog so many times that we might as well name it after them, always nailing our dark and gritty niche with their aptly branded “indie-Americana-spaghetti-western-folksy-lo-fi” sound.
“The Devil Knows” first makes contact with your eardrums via some melancholic, lo-fi acoustic guitar, easing itself into a somber and dusty soundscape. As per usual, the rhythm is supplied by a barebones kit, makeshift in nature, as though the two of them have fashioned a drum kit from the suitcases of travelers who dared cross their path.
As the song moves forward, more elements arrive, such as some dirty notes from a bass guitar and additional layers of guitar and banjo. Combined, these sounds spread the production to the far reaches of the sonic landscape, allowing the listener to become fully immersed in the wondrous elevation of the refrain.
Of course, it is ultimately Bad Flamingo’s vocal performance that always ends up smashing through our ceiling, and “The Devil Knows” contains more of that multi-layered, breathy, and sultry delivery that we’ve come to expect from their work. A soft harmony is present on the verses, with multi-tracked textures scattered throughout the composition, providing further evidence that Bad Flamingo completely owns their sound.
