Apifera - “Iris Is Neil”
Israel-based Apifera have just released the mystical, texture laden psychedelic track, “Iris Is Neil.”
The track is propelled forward a hypnotic drum groove that bears a strong resemblance to the iconic pattern Ringo Starr laid down for the track “Tomorrow Never Knows.” Punchy and tight, the pattern holds the same calm intensity that evokes the vibes of spiritual transcendence and altered consciousness.
The drums also pleasing offer an island of stability to the swirl of layers that dress the track. Surreal guitar textures and synth effects are expressively allowed to drone, howl, and shimmer with a fluid sense of motion and dynamics, bringing to mind the haunting ambiance of Robert Fripp on Eno’s albums, or even Nick McCabe on “A Northern Soul.” When coupled with the sweet, thick bass that pulses with a minimalist and repetitive pattern, the track can only be described as meditatively immersive.
The vocals on “Iris Is Neil“ bring to mind the lead singer of Malachai, Gee Ealey, specifically his singing on the album, Ugly Side of Love. The delivery has the same ghostly, otherworldly, and introspective tone, as if emerging from another dimension.
“Iris Is Neil” is a wonderful slice of hypnotic psychedelia that blends ambient Frippertronics with the Indian infused grooves of The Beatles. The track is taken from their forthcoming album, Keep The Outside Open, slated for release June 21st.
