Angela Aux - “Morning Sun”

From Bilbao, Spain, singer-songwriter and poet Angela Aux has just released the psych-soaked indie rock track, “Morning Sun.”

When trying to find words to describe the vibe of this track, I can only draw comparisons to the vibe of Hawkwind’s first album, like a more meditative version of a track such as “Hurry On Sundown,” mixed with krautrock’s NEU!... if you can imagine a slow-grooving version of “Hallogallo” with, perhaps, a pinch of Brian Eno’s “Golden Hours,” but with much better vocals than Eno’s boxy, monotone performance.

Morning Sun” is held together by an almost hypnotic electronic drum groove that provides a steady sense of consistency through the dreamy and reflective layers. Shifting from a simple kick-snare groove to a pulsing kick drum, the stripped-back percussion wonderfully allows space for the musical layers to breathe and be fully immersive. Weaving in between this tight beat is a sweet, mellow bass riff that injects a sense of spellbinding energy.

Clothing the track are various acoustic stringed instruments that bring natural warmth and harmonic richness. These elements intertwine, dance, and pulse vividly, especially as the crescendo rises like some kind of spiritual awakening. The mellotron flute heightens the ethereal atmospherics, while distant-sounding electric piano keys enhance the ambient qualities.

As a perfect match, the vocals of Angela Aux are intimate, meditative, and ooze the feel of an almost spiritual chant. “Morning Sun” is simply a sublime track that serves as a great introduction to his eclectic and tastefully experimental forthcoming album, Spacelarking in the Age of Spiritual Machines, due for release on May 31.
