Zivi - “Disappear”

Los Angeles-based songwriter and producer Zivi has just released the gorgeous track, “Disappear,” a song that explores finding love and finding oneself. The tones of the song pay homage to indie pop/rock’s golden era, with vintage guitar licks and well-chosen layers that radiate a sense of warm introspection.

The beginning of “Disappear” is stripped back and intimate in feel, bringing a sense of elegance that demands your attention. The bass tenderly pads the song with a warm pulse, while the drums softly advance the arrangement. Emotion is pleasingly added through the use of electric guitar. Tremolo on the rhythm is used sparingly to improve the groove, whilst the lead guitar is given room to breathe in the arrangement's empty spaces. The licks are gentle and clean, yet wonderfully expressive.

The song ebbs and flows effortlessly. As the chorus enters, the dynamics gracefully build, propelled by the drums’ increasing intensity and lifted by a bright and reflective organ pad. They then die back to the main groove, allowing the guitars to dance and play off of one another. Zivi‘s vocals exude a heartfelt intimacy, which is enhanced by a gorgeous dose of reverb. Supporting vocals are gently added in places to heighten the emotional impact of the performance. As the song draws closer to its end, I really like the Leslie speaker effect used on the backing vocals, which, for me, is a homage to late 1960s pop that was being tinged by the psychedelic movement.

Before reaching the song’s satisfying crescendo, Zivi gives us a guitar solo that is infused with bluesy tones. The performance brings to mind Dave Gilmour‘s expressive tones and is, again, nicely enhanced by the rhythm guitar. There is almost a sense of dueling in this section.

Disappear” is a really gorgeous track that gracefully dives into themes of love and self-discovery. The song is thoughtful, expressive, and delightfully dynamic. The song comes from Zivi’s new album, Lost In Love, which is now available everywhere you hear music.
