Zach Zeller - “Pillars of Light (feat. JustMakeMeCry)”
With his brand-new song, “Pillars of Light (feat. JustMakeMeCry),” Northern Californian Zach Zeller has given up a slow-burning dish of nostalgia. For me, this song offers healthy nods to the songwriting gods, like Neil Young, but there are no high and creakily off-key vocals. The song’s tone is beautifully intimate and minimalistic. To create the scene, only the necessary instruments are employed and it has fostered a very cosy vibe. There is a genuine air of tranquilly and also of reflection that comes to mind whilst listening. The song's driving acoustic guitar isn’t overly produced, which is a wonderful touch.
Warm slide guitar slowly howls, contributing to the contemplative atmosphere. The banjo arpeggios that bring rhythm to certain parts are particularly nice to me. The singer delivers the lyrics in a dreamy manner and the words also evoke the same thoughts. It’s a cosy, warm performance… one that doesn’t show off. It is subtle and one that fits the music exactly.
“Pillars of Light” comes from Zeller’s EP, Gather at Rise, now available everywhere.
