Wise John - “Marry Another Man”

Wise John’s “Marry Another Man,” a blue-eyed soul ballad that was created in association with the artist Elise Trouw and producer Quinn Devlin, is a melancholy song– one that draws on all the outstanding works produced in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Although it is not as “over worked” as a John Legend song, the vocal delivery has a contemporary feel. Wise John's vocal delivery is authentic and unpolished; it sounds like a live performance, rather than one that has been ruined by excessive vocal enhancements and autotuning. Lyrically, the song is based on a relationship dissection given to the one who got away. He seems to be honestly relying on his own loss-related personal experiences because the song has a very heartfelt feel to it.

A smooth but minimal lush band arrangement, with Hammond B3 organ and understated drumming lifts it. The background gospel voices have that wonderful, soaring quality that really elevates this arrangement into a dreamy reflective ambiance, making me think of P. P. Arnold.

Marry Another Man” is the second single to be released from The Mr. Love Sunset Show, a retro love song EP. This track’s release is accompanied by a no-frills live video of Wise John and the band recording the track in Quinn’s Brooklyn living room:

Marry Another Man” is available everywhere you get your music.
