Maisie May - “…when you think of me”
For those of you trying to rediscover yourselves after the demise of a relationship, we’ve got just the song for you. Formerly-Brooklyn-now-Los-Angeles-based Maisie May arrives on the blog with “…when you think of me,” just in time to guide you through your emotions.
May has a knack for producing top-shelf music in her bedroom studio, and “…when you think of me” is no exception to this rule. It starts us off by serving our ears with some ethereal synth padding beneath May’s fantastic and introspective vocal, which is slightly reminiscent of Soccer Mommy, but unique enough to carve her own path through the genre of dream pop. She spends the first half of the track “posing questions she wishes she could ask someone from her past,” which is a place we’ve all been, at one time or another, as we search for answers to help us grow into the people we actually want to become.
After the dreamy intro, we are hit with a full band production, featuring guitar work from Ghost Meadow and live drums by Nate Barnes. And though we are well aware that there is software to help bring modern music to life, there is simply no substitute for the sonic bliss of good music that has been crafted by actual human beings. Music also tends to hit differently when you can imagine it being performed on a stage, which is exactly what you will find here. And the gentle vocal harmonies that May layers across the soundscape will ensure that “…when you think of me” becomes a staple in many playlists, from those who dwell in heartache to those who seek growth after loss. We can’t wait for you to press play.
