Waldo Witt - “Without a Sound”

Waldo Witt’s “Without a Sound” is a trippy and psychedelic journey in the very traditional sense. From the first notes of the slow, muffled drum beat, you know you’re in for a ride. Unusual vocal sounds pan back and forth. They sound as if they have been pushed through a Leslie speaker… whilst a dreamy synth melody dances us into the first vocal lines.

The vocal performance has a great dynamic range and soars over the main chorus sections. The vocals are reminiscent of the typical 1960s English psych songs. The deep, low bass adds a richness and warmth to the song that complements the airy and beautifully psychedelic vocals.

The mix of the song is truly trippy, with a constant swirling of noises that create a sense of movement and momentum. These noises work well with the drums creating a bouncing feeling that keeps the track moving forward. There is a lot of clarity in the mix, but there also isn’t due to the kaleidoscope of sounds… it is a clever mix.

Without a Sound” will transport listeners to John Lennon’s Rolls Royce, and is a must-listen for any fan of psychedelic music. This is the final single from Waldo’s upcoming LP, Long Daze Dark Nights.

The artist says: “This was one of the last songs I wrote for the album, I was really embracing some of my earlier musical influences - the ones that first got me really excited about music like Syd Barrett and Brian Wilson. So it’s kind of this psychedelic journey through time, looking through a lens of bright eyed bliss and innocence, and using that lens to try to make sense of or understand the chaos of recent years.”
