Rare Monk - “Vapor Skills”

Vapor Skills,” the latest single by USA-based Rare Monk, is a mesmerizing fusion of hazy melodies and reflective undertones that makes for an engrossing, almost shoegaze-like listening experience.

The song’s opening bass line and relaxed drum groove quickly establish the mood for the rest of the song. The track is given an ethereal touch by the stripped-back, clean, and slightly reverberated guitar work. The two electric guitars provide more depth to the song’s melody and have a satisfying interplay with each other. An introspective and slightly psychedelic feel is offered by the retro synth pads.

The dynamic break has some additional delicate, yet exquisite guitar work, heightening the reflective mood. Rare Monk then leads us into the last section, which has a nice feeling of dynamic growth, thanks to the drums and vocals. The song then gently fades away like a dream, leaving you wanting more.

The vocals on “Vapor Skills” pleasantly fit the song’s overall atmosphere. Their soft delivery creates a sense of thoughtful reflection, whilst the lush backing vocals contribute an airy harmonization that broadens the song’s musical landscape.

Vapor Skills” has a deeper meaning when seen in the context of its origins. The tune captures the general atmosphere of fear and impending catastrophe. It was written at the end of 2019, when the pandemic and political tensions in the US were growing to a climax. Despite the passing of time, the themes of uncertainty and difficulties are still pertinent today, with the band implying that while we may have become accustomed to some issues, they have not yet fully vanished.

The band says the song: “is about coming to the realization that all the life skills one learns living in the city doesn't translate to skills needed to survive in the wilderness. The digital age has brought people many comforts, maybe too many comforts, so if and when things go to shit, will you be able to survive?”

Rare Monk’s “Vapor Skills” is a superbly crafted song that is filled with dreamy melodies, introspective themes, and a nice hint of psychedelic vibes. It is the first song on their brand new EP, Coronation:
