Tommy Douglas Keenan - “Sugared Impromptus”

Tommy Douglas Keenan’s latest release, “Sugared Impromptus,” is a great, fun song which I am finding hard to label in a genre. It is an indie folk/alt country/could-have-been-on-an-early-solo-Paul-McCartney-record kind of song. It is full of fun and has lots of great musical elements.

An acoustic guitar opens the song with a fingerpicking pattern that lasts for about 30 seconds. “Sugared Impromptus” then springs to life in a fantastic, shuffling groove. The electric guitar work is reminiscent of classic rock ‘n’ roll from the ‘50s and/or the early ‘60s, and it blends well with the fingerpicking on the acoustic guitar. The bass has a rambling feel underneath the arrangement. When combined with the tambourine, there is a nice, forward groove created by these two elements.

The vocal is captivating and conveys the lyrics beautifully, which are both catchy and descriptive of everyday life. The message of the song is straightforward: we know that we should be more responsible, but sometimes we choose to stay up all night anyway.

Overall, “Sugared Impromptus” has all the ingredients of a great song. It is full of great sounds, the lyrics are well written, and the vocal will make you want to sing along.
