The Plastic Cherries - “Moon II”

The Plastic Cherries, from the USA, have just released the gorgeously retro “Moon II.” The song can only be described as early 1970s classic pop, from start to finish.

For me, it is the mellow and nostalgic tones from the guitars that give this song a great retro feel. A dreamy psychedelic ambience is created by the rhythm guitar’s jangly and rolling melodies. The is classically enhanced and contrasted by the lead guitar’s fuzzed-up tone. The stripped-back drums provide a steady framework as the bass grooves underneath. The addition of an acoustic guitar gives the composition’s overall texture a bright quality, which suits the mood completely. Subtle key tones gracefully weave in and out of the melody, giving it richness and depth.

A dreamy and calm section of the song with gentle keys and a marching drum beat is introduced at the dynamic break. This section evokes a sense of daydreaming and almost gives off a feeling of longing. The lyrics to “Moon II” express a desire for liberation and an escape from the wearisome parts of existence, which we can get settled into. The song calls us to remember a time when we eagerly anticipated the future, when we anticipated utopia over dystopia. The vocal on “Moon II,” again, has that great, old-fashioned vibe, as if you are playing your latest vinyl record buy. This is given more depth by the addition of breathy, carefree backing vocal layers.

The Plastic Cherries have delivered a true gem with “Moon II,” giving us smooth melodies, classic instrumentation, and dreamy vocals. This is the second single taken from their upcoming LP, The Plastic Cherries on the Moon.
