The Coo - “Rosie”

UK-based Matt Arthur and NL-based Jara Holdert, aka The Coo, have returned to us with the rich and nostalgic vibes of “Rosie,” the second single from their forthcoming debut record.

Lovers of authentic folk music will be delighted to learn that this track was recorded live, all at once, with the analogue gear from days of yore: a Tascam 388. If you have ever read a single page of our blog, you will already know that we often find it difficult to resist the authenticity and thickness of recordings captured on tape.

With this in mind, when you press play on “Rosie,” the result is a production that sounds as though it is being performed in the same room that you are listening. An acoustic guitar sets the vibrant scene, immediately conjuring the folksy spirits of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s in both its tone and delivery.

The vocal performance follows suit, beginning with a verse from Arthur, remarkably reminiscent of Laurel Canyon in style and saturation. Holdert arrives with her delightful harmony on the refrain, adding a profound sense of nostalgic weight to the sonic space– if there’s one thing that makes us say yes to a folk song, it’s typically a duet such as this.

In true folksy fashion, Holdert takes the helm on the second verse, adding a wondrous juxtaposition to Arthur’s initial delivery. There is true musical magic occurring when their voices weave themselves together, ultimately culminating in a tremendous nod to Sonny and Cher.

If you find yourself fancying a bit of yesteryear via a modern vessel, you cannot go wrong with “Rosie.” Please join us in spinning it as we patiently await the release of The Coo’s LP, due out in October.
