Cam Bina - “The Childhood Actor”

Cam Bina‘s new release, “The Childhood Actor,” is a playful, retro story wrapped up in a song. The lyrics speak of the perils of fame and the challenges of navigating early success. The song begins with warm piano and acoustic guitar, alongside a gently pulsating bass and a classic drum sound that evokes the feel of the 1970s.

There is a distinct Velvet Underground and David Bowie influence present throughout the song, with the jolly sounding piano lines and guitar solo contributing to this vibe– think Loaded crossed with Ziggy. The vocals are delivered with a style reminiscent in tone to Bowie and Reed as well. The whole song exudes a retro vibe, from the spoken-word element to the lovely old honkytonk piano solo. The backing vocals also add a nice touch to the song, adding to the spritely feel of the track.

The 1970s sound may also be oozing from the recording processes used: classic 2” tape and an analogue console. I think this has definitely contributed to the warm, open feel to the recording.

I definitely think “The Childhood Actor” is one to check out, especially if you like Reed and Bowie. It captures their same, playful spirit, as well as skill in storytelling. Cam Bina has definitely created a memorable track.
