The Burma
The Burma have arrived with their new album, Sucker For Stars. It’s a cool collection of songs that vary splendidly to keep your ears smiling. Don’t pretend that your ears don’t smile. I’ve seen them do it. So many nice things can be said about this album. For instance, I think “Sleepers” is a fantastic song and a must listen… in fact, I want to review it, but I’m gonna leave you curious so you check it out for yourself and see what I mean.
To keep my wandering mind on course, here I’ll be reviewing the title track. Embracing a slightly retro vibe, the song, “Sucker For Stars,” sports a driving, four-on-the-snare drum pattern that propels the bass groove as jangly guitars bring spice to your life. A little slap back delay on the sweet vocals stylings of Tony O’Donavan sets things off nicely. It’s an upbeat tune with a sentimental flair. Vibe and great vocals really capture the heart of this song and actually, to me, the whole album.
Did I mention “Magazine Road?” I should have. It‘s a dreamy, intimate track that builds beautifully into a magnificently crafted tune, eschewing conventions of arrangement with delightful results. The same could be said about most songs on this album, in fact. “Into The Light” combines engaging rhythms with a more assertive vocal– that is, until the bridge brings the delicate beauty back, setting you up to rock out when the riff resumes… There’s a special treat at the end of this song… I’m not going to spoil the surprise those! It’s that good.
Don’t worry, this isn’t a track by track review of the whole album. No need to do that, because you’re probably halfway through listening to it yourself by now and you don’t need me to tell you that it’s got great tunes aplenty. Well, at least I tried stay on topic. You can’t blame if I listened to more than just the single. When it’s good, I’m an album kind of guy.
