Svanhildur - “Getaways”
It is with great pleasure that we reveal the debut release from Swedish/Icelandic singer Svana Magnusdottir, aka Svanhildur, a magnificently raw song entitled “Getaways.”
The track has all the vibe of 1970s songwriting, maintaining a performance that has not been altered or enhanced by modern digital manipulation. “Getaways” does not pretend to be anything more than authentic music made by human beings, beginning with some softly played acoustic guitar. With all the grace of Joni Mitchell, Svana’s honest vocal enters the tune, delightfully embarking on a story about “lovers holding on to each other knowing they’ll face an inevitable farewell.”
“Getaways” embodies the character of a live performance and it is not difficult to imagine it being performed in your living room. Vocal harmonies have been provided by Peter Anthonson and weave their way into the track, elevating the listener to a joyful cloud of musical elation. A rhythm falls into place and it effortlessly urges the song forward, ensuring that listeners remain engaged, yet not completely washing away the looming sense of melancholy.
Lovers of music will marvel at the way that Svana’s voice is, at times, slightly reminiscent of Fiona Apple, especially during the piano-filled dynamic shift that initiates the song’s final third. The full band soon returns to provide another glimpse of that sweet, vintage sound and we simply cannot wait to see what Svanhildur releases next.
