Leatherette - “Sunbathing”

Italian post-punk band Leatherette have released “Sunbathing,” the latest single taken from their debut album Fiesta, due out on 14th October via Bronson Recordings. This is the followup single to “So Long,” which we covered a couple months ago. And we’re not sure how we missed it, but their EPK contains the greatest description we’ve seen thus far: “five shy guys who sometimes get off the stage and punch people…” And they go on to describe their sound as a ”…car-crash of jagged noise, twisted love and dark, anguished melody.” With an introduction like that, it’s no wonder that we’re such fans of these lads.

Much has changed since we last wrote about them. They are now closing in on 14k monthly listeners on Spotify, which is simply fantastic. And this new single is made up of one minute and forty-one seconds of nonstop energy, all the while being embellished with an odd sound that we believe to be a guitar. However, the bass line, when combined with the crashing drums, is what really stands out, in our opinion. It somehow makes us think of Oasis' song “Falling Down.” The vocal is effective and beautifully abrasive.

It is “a brilliant song about hope– hoping for a better life, and, when necessary, telling the world to f*ck off. It has an addictive punk-shoegaze anthem sound: loud, quick, and rough. The band explains: "'Sunbathing' was almost born as a joke, it came out of nowhere. We wanted to write a happy cheesy pop song and then completely destroy it from within.”
