Still Corners - “Today is the Day”
Still Corners, comprised of Tessa Murray and Greg Hughes, who met by chance at a London train stop in 2009, have just released the cinematic and reflective new track, “Today is the Day.”
The song is founded on a delicate, almost dusty, layer of acoustic guitar that shimmers and weaves energetically across the composition. A magnificent vintage vibe is imbued by the track’s rhythm section. The unfussy drum arrangement pushes the composition forward at a steady but relaxed cadence. The percussive tones have an exquisite early-1970s vibe. The bass creates a warm and thick pulsing foundation, adding a lush sense of swagger. The atmospherics are delightfully chilled.
A cinematic quality is splashed across the arrangement, thanks to the sweet electric lead guitar motif licks. This has a definite Ennio Morricone quality, reminiscent of the classic spaghetti Western film, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, directed by Sergio Leone. These tones help evoke images of vast landscapes, intensity, drama, and tension as they slide almost intimidatingly down from the sky. Swells of atmospheric electric guitar deliciously contrast this darker layer, flourishing vividly whilst gently helping to build momentum.
The beautiful vocal is delivered with a cool, collected, nonchalant-like character. The performance is superbly supported by layers of immersive backing vocals. These layers harmoniously rise up from different sides of the panning field, building stunningly towards the rich and dreamy crescendo.
Murray says: “You have all sorts of connections with songs you write but some seem to connect on a deeper level for whatever reason and this song does that for us. I think there were two sides to this song, one is that we wanted to say something about seizing the moment as life is precious and tomorrow is not promised and that is echoed in the chorus, Today is the Day etc. On the other side there’s this connection to nature and that's peppered throughout the lyrics as well.”
“Today is the Day” is a truly captivating track. The song is taken from the forthcoming album, Dream Talk, set for release Friday, April 5th.
