Steph Green - “Teardrop Skies”
Canada’s Steph Green borrowed a Tascam MS-16 to record her sophomore album, Lore, and the result is quite magnificent. We are big fans of songwriters utilizing a DIY approach to their craft, as well as harkening back to the tech of yesteryear, so pressing play on Green’s new single, “Teardrop Skies,” is quite a sonic experience, filled to its tippy top with delightful spoonfuls of ear candy.
As soon as the song begins, it is not at all difficult to imagine it being recorded in a time before DAWs. There’s a certain thick and warm ambience to analogue gear that we just do not hear in many of the submissions that we receive. “Teardrop Skies” is of the folk variety, forgoing many modern production tactics in order to maintain its honest and heartfelt course. Here, Green seems to have taken advantage of the divine effect achieved in layering vocals– if you have ever read our blog, you know that this is a sound which we simply cannot resist.
In addition to Green’s chill and dreamy vocal performance, highlights include some extremely vibey and genre-appropriate guitar sounds. One seems to simply strum chords above the rhythm section, while another adds a vintage-tinged padding to the entire production. These audible fragments of tasty ear candy become more frequent as the track progresses over its two and a half minute runtime. These additional elements allow the song to have a fantastic and natural crescendo, which is simply another reason we had to share it with you today.
This is our first time hearing from Steph Green, but if the rest of Lore contains songs with a similar vibe to “Teardrop Skies,” we certainly hope that she sends us the rest of it.
