Southey - “Into The Sea”

Sydney, Australia-based singer-songwriter Southey returns to the blog with “Into The Sea.”

The song opens with the intimate strums of acoustic guitar, immediately reminding us of the reason we first became enchanted with Southey’s sound. The vibe is raw and chill and draws in its listener, as only the finest of folk songs will often do.

The soft and delicate notes of a piano emerge, lightly tapping out a melody above the stripped-back sonic landscape. Southey’s voice arrives in all of its authentic glory, void of any modern embellishments, guaranteed to grab your attention and enthrall you with his storytelling.

Into The Sea” yields the subject matter of becoming emotionally flooded– to the point of wanting to toss your phone into the ocean. We’ve all been there, at wit’s end, enveloped with frustration, wishing to rid ourselves of the tireless stream of information that never ceases to enter our lives.

The highlight here resides within the song’s hook, which Southey has imbued with a multi-layered utopia of vocal textures. These additional layers bring a substantial elevation to the arrangement and will likely be one of the reasons you return to “Into The Sea” for multiple listens.

From there, the song invites a plethora of ethereal tones, including swelling backing vocals and cinematic percussive elements. “Into The Sea” takes on a dramatic sense of ebb and flow by adding and removing a variety of its many parts, including an old-timey radio effect before the last throw of choruses.

This is only the second time we are hearing from Southey, but he is fast becoming one of our favorites. We are confident that after you give “Into The Sea” a listen, he will become one of your favorites as well.
