Sophie May - “The Babysitter”

Sophie May has just released a new single entitled “The Babysitter,” a song about finally feeling like a partner in an adult relationship, instead of dating those who are too immature to be in one in the first place. And though we tend to veer away from any music with a hint of romantic subject matter, once we heard her voice, we could not say no.

The Babysitter” begins with some very soft and raw acoustic guitar, gently strummed as it sets the mood for the lyrics to be delivered. And in the truest of indie folk fashion, Sophie May’s vocal arrives with its confident and emotional finesse, slightly reminiscent of Lizzy McAlpine and Angel Olsen– the kind of voice that urges you to listen, regardless of the words entering your ears.

As the track continues, Sophie May reflects on past relationships, never seeing the red flags until after the fact– the way that we pretend to know what love is, then find someone who actually has his or her life together. “The Babysitter” remains quite sparse in its arrangement, until some bass arrives on the second verse, then some ethereal synth– nothing over the top and very tastefully displayed.

With the arrival of the second refrain, listeners will receive the glorious gift of the vocal harmonies– always one of the best elements in these folksy tunes. And here, they are absolutely angelic as they make room for the retro-tinged lead guitar, before the song ultimately ends just as softly as it began.
