Secret Mezzanine - “House on the Rock”

Secret Mezzanine have just released their dreamy new song, “House on the Rock,” and it’s an understatement to call it good.

The song begins softly, with bird song and an acoustic guitar, and it perfectly sets the tone for this lush little number. The tune gradually dons clothing in the shape of musical instruments. Drums are added after the keys. Each element that is added is laid-back and carefree. It’s incredibly enjoyable to listen to the bass line by itself. The choruses make some very clear references to the early 1970s in the sounds. The whole vibe of the song makes me think of bands like ELO and, in places, John Martyn. For instance, the synthesised noises that softly pad the tune are clearly classic tones. The whole song has a vintage elegance to it.

The band describe the song: “It was inspired by a trip to the House on the Rock in Wisconsin that one of our members took after reading American Gods, and the song speaks to the feeling of awe felt when human ingenuity meets the beauty of nature.”

House on the Rock” is taken from Secret Mezzanine’s upcoming album, Field Guide to American Houses.
