Savoir Adore - “Better For You”

Brooklyn-based indie duo Paul Hammer and Lauren Zettler, aka Savoir Adore, have just released “Better For You,” a song about refining yourself for those you love.

Admittedly, the subject matter is not our usual brand of indie, as we often find ourselves drawn into the darkness of existence, but once you get “Better For You” into your ears, it is impossible not to bask in its ‘80s-inspired mellifluous sense of hope. It opens with the muted notes of an acoustic guitar, quickly joined by a lo-fi rhythm and some gloriously synthy tones. The vibe is distinctly chill, perfect for your daily commute.

Zettler has been tasked with the initial vocal duties, offering the listener a wonderfully dreamy performance. And while there is an obvious tinge of melancholy in both the melody and the lyrics, Hammer arrives to provide a satisfying and delightful harmony that we find completely irresistible. For the refrain, a hi-hat emerges, providing a steady sense of momentum beneath the ear-worm vocal hook and leaving us confident that you will be singing it in your head for the rest of the day.

A major selling point with “Better For You” is the way that the organic sounds have been perfectly melded with the remnants of the digital realm; the acoustic guitar seems right at home amidst the multiple layers of synth, and we have not been able to stop listening to it since it arrived. Another focal point here is the dynamic shift that lines the final third, allowing the song to shine a spotlight on Zettler’s upper register during its ‘80s-imbued outro.

This is our first glimpse into the craft of Savoir Adore, but if they keep making songs like “Better For You,” we certainly hope that it’s not the last. While we all await the arrival of their new LP, give this one a good, hard listen and be sure to connect with the duo: Instagram | Spotify | Soundcloud | Facebook
