Roofman - “john”

Dutch singer-songwriter Thijs van der Meulen, aka Roofman, has returned to the blog with “john,” the final offering from his latest EP, 8 songs from the bathroom (5-8).

john” is sparsely arranged, consisting of only van der Meulen’s vocal, some softly plucked acoustic guitar, and an organ that pads the entire production. And though it may be barebones in its musical components, it comes with mountains of emotion and attention to detail.

This is the sixth song we have featured from van der Meulen, and that, alone, should tell you how endearing his music is. He has delivered an entire album’s worth of material from Cloud Hill’s bathroom, maintaining an honest vibe for each track, never falling into digital temptation, and, instead, making use of analog outboard gear to produce a classic and authentic presentation.

john” is a resounding and emotional homage to a special person in van der Meulen’s life: "John is one of the people in my life who I've known the longest. We’re not related, but he kind of feels like an uncle to me. John is someone who chooses to live life differently. Sometimes it works really well, but sometimes he needs to get back on track. I’m always fascinated by people who are bold enough to live outside of the mainstream and just do it their own way. Cheers John!"

It has been a pleasure to watch these two EPs unfold and while we encourage you to give “john” a few spins, we also hope that you’ll find time to enjoy the entirety of 8 songs from the bathroom, both (1-4) and (5-8).
