Robin Kenny - “OLD MAN”

Ottawa, Canada-based Robin Kenny has just released the captivating indie rock track, “OLD MAN,” a track that possesses a lush, experimental and adventurous edge reminiscent of acts like Blur. It feels like it is designed to challenge your expectations through the thoughtful use of musical textures.

Built around the reflective tones of piano, “OLD MAN” imparts a nostalgic quality to the music, serving wonderfully as the vehicle for conveying the emotions in the track, with moments subtly building to expressive intensity. Over the top, a bright bell tone synth adds a dreamy, spritely layer.

As the track reaches its midpoint, the sonic palette widens with increasingly avant-garde layers. This is foreshadowed earlier in the track, with an increasingly meandering, gritty bass and the sound of breaking glass. Atmospheric synth layers begin to inject an experimental edge with weaving melodic lines and intense textures. As this reaches a climax, the drums shift from a steady beat to a more aggressive tone, while gritty electric guitar is used to enhance the driving swagger of the groove.

The enigmatic vocal of Robin Kenny is gorgeously breathy and melodic. The performance explores a variety of moods, from reflective, dreamy tones to sorrowful, haunting inflections. When combined with the backing vocals and music, there is a mysterious, uneasy quality to the performance that is hard to resist.

Lyrically, the track recounts “the alienation of becoming entangled in someone else’s fantasy and unreciprocated infatuation.” ““OLD MAN” is the second single off of Robin Kenny’s forthcoming EP, which is set to release later this year and, after pressing play on this track, you won’t want to miss it!
