Richard Strater - “The Land of Palmetto”

From Camden, South Carolina, singer-songwriter Richard Strater has just released the wonderful sounds of “The Land of Palmetto.”

The track begins with a duet of acoustic guitar and piano, churning out a melancholic and introspective foundation. This mood is greatly accentuated upon the arrival of Strater’s vocal, richly stripped-back to reveal a palpable emotional integrity.

For “The Land of Palmetto,” Strater has enlisted a variety of South Carolina-based musicians in order to get the formula just right. The first to arrive is the subdued sounds of a banjo, softly padding out the song’s underbelly, followed by the glorious, swelling cries from a pedal steel.

The eventual emergence of the vintage-tinged rhythm section carries with it a delightful vocal harmony, both successfully adding a remarkable sense of weight and width to the arrangement, respectively. The gentle and cinematic nature of the song is truly impossible to ignore.

The Land of Palmetto” is the perfect song to provide a soundtrack on those late-night drives to nowhere, when getting lost in music is the only acceptable destination.
