Puppy Teeth - “Black Honey”
Edinburgh-based indie quartet Puppy Teeth arrive on our blog with the dreamy sounds of their debut single, “Black Honey.”
Pressing play will invite a soothing and ethereal production into your ears, consisting of organic elements that have, without a doubt, been performed by actual human beings. The resulting groove is secured by a gentle and playful rhythm that supports some vibrantly effected electric guitar. A bit of bass churns softly, providing a sense of closure to the arrangement in the way that adds weight and width.
Front woman Anna Trost uses her voice to add the final ingredient and the primary reason that we could not resist “Black Honey.” A major highlight lies in the arrival of the harmony layer, magically stretching the song to the far ends of the sonic space. Her vocal performance is charmingly emotive as it sends the lyrics into your ears and fans of Men I Trust, Phoebe Bridgers, and Mazzy Star are sure to be enthralled.
The second verse reveals the vocal stylings of lead guitarist Theo Black, whose Jim Morrison-esque delivery lends a rich juxtaposition to that of Trost’s. And as they delightfully form a musical bond between their game of call and response, both the production and the arrangement allow the listener to easily imagine the song being performed live. And if you’re in their neck of the woods, you can experience “Black Honey“ in person on December 6 (Glasgow) and December 14 (Edinburgh).
