Plum - “The Road”

Plum‘s “The Road” is a beautifully psychedelic song that explores the human experience of struggling with regressive habits and the cyclical nature of life.

The song opens with the foundational fingerpicking acoustic guitar and a slow drum beat, setting a contemplative mood. There is something very meditative about this rhythmic combination. Electric guitar and piano fill out the melody, with the bass pulsing gently underneath the song. “The Road” is given a nice movement via shaker and it nicely adds to the unusual tones and textures woven throughout the song. There is a feeling that the time speeds up slightly in places, which adds to the trippy nature of the music.

As “The Road” progresses, the acoustic guitar shifts to strumming, giving the song a nice drive and texture. The electric guitar solos some great tones and the bass becomes more complex. The falsetto vocal on the song, again, adds a nice psychedelic touch, with the lyrics exploring the theme of breaking free from self-destructive cycles. The artist’s personal experience of struggling with relapse during the pandemic is reflected in the well-written and emotional lyrics.

Plum’s “The Road” is a powerful, haunting, introspective, yet really beautiful first single from their upcoming self-titled EP.
