Pet Snake - “New Arrivals”
Liverpool-based indie songstress Evelyn Halls, aka Pet Snake, is back on the blog with “New Arrivals,” a song that traverses the natural distance that grows between friends with the inevitability of adult responsibilities and obligations.
The motif of aging is not uncommon with the work of Pet Snake, as we discussed in one of her previous tracks, “Getting Older,” and it appears to make for some profound subject matter. And while “New Arrivals” delves deeply into this resonance, it still bears a significantly warm, indie-pop glow.
Atop a lo-fi beat, some gritty guitar chords crack the surface of the song, making way for a charmingly authentic and captivating vocal performance from Halls. The lyrics recount memories that could have been pulled from our own lives, reminiscing about the days of yore, when the idea of starting a family had no impact or influence on our existing friendships.
An electronically-driven rhythm resides beneath the hook, elevating the multi-tracked vocal performance through the ceiling. At this point, we are catching a few glimpses of The Cranberries’ influence on Pet Snake’s craft, offering “New Arrivals” a nostalgic weight that we find find thoroughly irresistible.
With a peeled-back and emotional middle eight that will keep you coming back for more, “New Arrivals” grants listeners a five-minute respite from reality and serves as a reminder to spend time with those you love before life gets in the way of everything.
