Reuben Medlin - “Pain Cargo”

Eighteen-year-old British artist Reuben Medlin has completely wowed us with his new track, “Pain Cargo.” This song is an ethereal, cinematic, and super chill piece of music that was written, recorded, and produced by Medlin in his bedroom. And with how easily accessible recording gear is these days, we’re not too surprised, but when it sounds this good, we’re completely blown away.

Pain Cargo,” at first, was vaguely reminiscent of Dayglow, another artist who took the world by storm by way of bedroom recordings. And at just over two-minutes in runtime, Medlin wastes no time here, introducing the melody before quickly greeting the listener with a steady rhythm. His vocals are smooth and tastefully produced, with no annoying relics from the excessive use of autotune. The reverb is thick and ever-present, causing the song to softly glide into your ears and float around inside of your brain, allowing you an opportunity to forget about your worries for its brief duration, even though the song’s lyrics explore the demise of a relationship.

About “Pain Cargo,” Medlin adds: “The song is about the feeling of knowing things are coming to an end and also thinking back to if someone really cared about you as much as you thought they did.”
