Orpin - “riverbed”
Canadian singer-songwriter Taryn Jacobs, aka Orpin, arrives on our blog like a beam of light shining down from the gods of indie folk. Thus, it is with great pleasure that we share with you her latest release, “riverbed.”
This song won our hearts as soon as we pressed play, ethereally fading in before Jacobs begins her lovely vocal performance. Her voice is reminiscent of both Soccer Mommy and Julien Baker and if you’ve ever read a single page of our website, you will know that this is the bullseye of our wheelhouse.
Reverberating guitar provides a hazy, otherworldly atmosphere and it is not at all difficult to imagine “riverbed” flooding a sea of concertgoers at some future music festival. Jacobs effortlessly meanders through her vocal gamut, ebbing and flowing with the guitar’s magnificent waves of sound.
Around the one-minute mark, the arrangement is filled with a modest rhythm section, utilizing a steady beat and round bass to push the song forward. Glorious layers of vocal harmonies sweep in, saturating the listening space and providing a delicate crescendo. At its peak, Jacobs adds some fervor to her lyrical delivery, ensuring that all of you return for multiple listens.
As “riverbed” descends towards its conclusion, a glimmer of slide guitar rises to the surface and we find ourselves completely enamored with every last bit of this freaking song. We do warn you, however, that pressing play will lead to your abandonment of every other song in the universe– this one is definitely a keeper.
“riverbed” comes from Orpin’s upcoming EP, Fate & Other Feelings, due out in November.
