Oliver Hazard - “Northern Lights”

Oliver Hazard is back on the blog with “Northern Lights.” Listeners will be delighted as this colorful tune is sure to brighten any mood. As the guitars enter, I think to myself: “Oooooh yeah, this is good.” As it progresses with a great vocal, I am quickly made aware that great songwriting and arrangement is in play. A brief silence in the accompaniment to highlight the vocal displays a masterful use of space for impact.

According to the artist, it’s a song “about longing for better days and appreciating the tough ones.” The sound definitely conveys this in a perfectly complimentary way, with the use of major scales, leaning more toward a hopeful feeling than one of melancholy. I am sometimes afraid of happy sounding songs, but this one navigates the joy beautifully and leaves me feeling quite content with this moment. Energy builds nicely with sixteenth notes on the hi-hats and sweet piano playing in moments of crescendo.  It is definitely an enjoyable tune that is sure to put a smile on your face.
