néomí - “your girl”
We last featured Surinamese/Dutch singer-songwriter Neomi Speelman, aka néomí, back in April, upon the release of “oh my darling,” from her EP after. And while we had that collection of six songs to hold us over for half a year, we are delighted to have néomí back on the blog with the authentic and dreamy sounds of her latest release, “your girl.”
Immediately upon pressing play, the track fills the air with an upbeat rhythm, complete with a very satisfying guitar tone and a layer of tranquil synth. The vibe is one that walks the line between the more folksy aesthetic of her previous release and an energetic, almost indie rock sound, wrapped in the very chill ribbons of dream pop.
néomí’s vocal arrives, reminding us of the way we were first completely enamored with her sound. She has been blessed with one of those voices that has all of the soothing, familiar tones of modern music, yet is distinct enough to stand on its own. And although we are unable to draw any comparisons to other artists, it is every bit as cozy as your favorite sweater on a chilly morning.
Additional layers of vocals swell on the refrain, accompanied by a fresh veneer of synthy resonance and a distant, droning note from what appears to be an electric guitar. The energy of “your girl” is infectious, reminding us of the first time we heard Florence + The Machine or Maggie Rogers. It is not at all difficult to discern that there is something quite spectacular occurring here.
“your girl” comes complete with a bridge before finishing us off with a final refrain. The beat is relentless throughout and will make for one hell of a backdrop on your morning/evening commute. Our only hope is that this release implies that more music from néomí is on the way.
