Munan - “Stoked & Stoned”
Korean-Australian artist Peter Lee, aka Munan, has just released the trance-inducing indie psych track, “Stoked & Stoned.”
“Stoked & Stoned” is one hell of a psych ear worm driven by its relentless zombie disco beat. The forward mechanical stomp is only broken by brief segues into fever dreamish ambient sound scaping. The nearest comparisons I can draw to what Munan has cooked up is if Jeff Wayne collaborated with Tame Impala. Synths drenched in reverb shimmer and swirl like neon lights on a glitterball whilst guitars blaze like an acid trip through a desert wasteland. The production is sublime, intoxicating, spectral.
Heightening the hypnotic delirium of the track is the vocal of Munan. What is especially delightful about this weightless performance is that it is unique. Munan is not copying Kevin Parker or any of the other modern psych acts. The tone feels almost like a mirage on the horizon, detached, hazy, and coming across as a half-remembered dream.
On the track, Munan adds: “Stoked & Stoned is one of the oldest and most meaningful tracks in my upcoming project. It draws inspiration from a dive bar of the same name, which was our go-to spot for weekend hangouts. The place held a special energy, full of memories shared with old friends and new faces. This track is my tribute to the atmosphere, the people, and the music that made the bar such a special place. The track itself started with a simple bass loop I recorded in my small studio. As a huge fan of house and disco music, I’ve always loved those addictive basslines and driving disco beats. With Stoked & Stoned, I wanted to blend the grooves of house music with a gritty, grunge-rock disco vibe.”
Relentless, beautiful and immersive “Stoked & Stoned” is a confident track that blurs the lines between hallucination and retro nostalgia. 2025 promises to be a busy year for Munan with a new EP slated for release later this year. We cannot wait!
