Dream Phases - “Mrs. Songbyrd”

USA-based Dream Phases latest release, “Mrs. Songbyrd,” is a great serving of retro sunshine pop and it is filled to its top with great sounds. The song is built upon bright piano tones and a deep bass that pushes the song along nicely. There is a great inviting atmosphere to the music. Fuzzy guitar tones and retro drum fills also further add a touch of nostalgia to the track.

The vocal performance has a lot of great character and is supported by gentle, airy backing vocals. The song exudes that retro early 1970s feel to all of the selected textures. And I especially like near the end, as the main vocal hook is sung, there is an increasing tinge of psychedelia to the music.

The lyrics celebrate sweet melodies and shared good times, but there’s also a third eye’s confiding wink that all is not well in this smile-besotted world. The mixture of upbeat and darker tones is a classic formula of songwriting and makes me think of examples like The Beatles’ “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer.” Ultimately, the message in this song feels like spreading joy can come at a price to the entertainer.

Overall, “Mrs. Songbyrd” is a great indie rock/pop song with a slight psychedelic feel towards the end. All of the musical elements have been carefully picked to give a warm, retro sound. This is a good and memorable song.
